In 2008, voters in Independence County Arkansas passed a countywide 1/4 cent sales tax for economic development purposes. The annual revenue from this initiative is approximately $1.3 million per calendar year. In 2012, Independence County Economic Development, Inc., provided $759,450 in direct cash incentives to industrial businesses in the County that created new fulltime employment. The individual amount of the cash grants is tied to the amount of private investment, number, hourly wage, and skill level of the new jobs created. This program resulted in the creation of 467 new industrial jobs countywide and the collective private investment in machinery and buildings of $19.48 million in 2012
In December 2012, the Independence County Economic Development Commission closed on the purchase of 47 vacant acres for use as a future County Business Park. The site is located on Arkansas Highway 25, also know as White Drive, just north of Batesville, Arkansas. The property is immediately adjacent to the Missouri and Northern Arkansas rail line and is serviced by all public utilities. The Independence County Business Park will be available for use by industrial prospects beginning in the 2nd quarter 2013.
